magnify“WE BELIEVE” that in the best American tradition of helping others help themselves, now is the time to join with other countries in a historic pact for compassion and justice to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty. WE RECOGNIZE that a pact including such measures as fair trade, debt relief, fighting corruption and directing additional resources for basic needs – education, health, clean water, food, and care for orphans – would transform the futures and hopes of the an entire generation in the poorest countries, at a cost equal to just one percent more of the US budget. WE COMMIT ourselves – one person, one voice, one vote at a time – to make a better, safer world for all.”

ONE also calls for debt cancellation, trade reform and anti-corruption measures in a comprehensive package to help Africa and the poorest nations beat AIDS and extreme poverty. What is the challenge? Right now, more than 1 billion people –one in every six people on the planet – live on less than $1 a day.More than 40 million people worldwide are living with HIV/AIDS; more than 6 million people die each year of causes related to TB, malaria and HIV/AIDS.More than 6 million children in developing countries die every year from preventable illness, while as many as 500,000 women die during pregnancy or childbirth.
More than 100 million children are out of school around the world.

ONE is already delivering results…. ONE aims to help People raise their voice as ONE against the emergency of AIDS and extreme poverty, so that decision makers will do more to save millions of lives in the poorest countries.
The ONE Campaign generated over 500,000 e-letters to President Bush before the G8 Summit in July. In response, Bush and other world leaders promised $25 billion more for Africa and $50 billion more globally by 2010, as well as specific efforts on HIV/AIDS and education. In one targeted 24 hour campaign, ONE generated close to 25,000 calls to the U.S. Senate to help fund the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, increasing its life-saving funding by $100 million.
But it must grow to be bigger and better. 2005 brought unprecedented public action on bolder measures to fight global AIDS and extreme poverty. On a wave of support from over 2 million Americans, the U.S. made historic commitments on international assistance and debt cancellation at the July G8 Summit in Gleneagles, Scotland. It will be a crucial year for ensuring the necessary commitments are made to turn these promises into reality for the world’s poorest people. By 2008 we need to have 5 million supporters, each of us doing what we can, learning more, telling friends, and calling Congress. Join us!
